About Ayres Stiles-Hall
I\'m an experienced teacher of English working to create rigorous, inclusive, collaborative learning communities for students. In exploring and curating the skills and habits of mind that will best serve our students, I\'m interested in considering how to combine and connect the classic and the modern canon, as well as traditional and marginalized voices, in order to provide both windows and mirrors so that every student has a chance to learn and grow during their time at CA – grow as a student of literature, grow as an author of their own voice, and grow as a more compassionate and understanding human being. I\'m also working to revise my rubrics and assessments to empower students in their quest to find and refine their voices as writers, their understand their own process of knowing, and even their understanding of themselves as learners and people. During the six-year term when I was department chair, I worked to facilitate professional growth for my colleagues, creating meetings that allowed us to learn from each other, and questions and goals that required us to (re)imagine what \"good\" looks like in the 21st century, centering questions of identity and collaboration along with rigorous logic and clear and precise rhetoric. At present, I\'m engaging with colleagues, current literature, and alums of Concord Academy to imagine how we can use AI creatively and constructively to help students leverage their ideas and support their learning.I have been teaching for nearly 30 years, and for me, being able to ask questions and really challenge both myself and my students for new and vital answers is essential: I have come to understand that as a necessary part of maintaining the balance that allows me to be truly engaged in my job and in my life. Specialties: curriculum development; team dynamics and goals articulation; rubric development; connecting academic rigor with equity within the community and inclusivity within every classroom
