About Andrew Andy Young Choi
Dr. Andrew Young Choi is a board-certified counseling psychologist whose uniquely broad and varied professional background informs his scholar-practitioner projects to advance liberation within the Asian diaspora.Dr. Choi’s award-winning scholarship employs queer of color critique to illuminate the complexities of intersectionality, racism-related stress, and identity among Asian Americans. Leveraging psychoanalytic concepts, his interdisciplinary research explores the evolving nature of anti-Asian racialization and its theoretical and clinical implications. He brings advanced methodological expertise, including critical analysis, latent class analysis, multivariate statistics, psychometrics, structural equation modeling, and qualitative content analysis. Dr. Choi has authored over 20 publications and received more than 30 awards, honors, and fellowships for his intellectual contributions.Clinically, Dr. Choi specializes in culturally responsive psychodynamic psychotherapy for high-achieving professionals from diverse backgrounds. He creatively integrates insight-oriented, goal-focused, and decolonial principles to support a broad range of mental health and personal development goals. He has provided effective care across diverse settings—including college counseling centers, community mental health clinics, and inpatient and outpatient hospitals—with extensive public sector experience serving clients from global majority and LGBTQ+ populations. Dr. Choi has been consistently commended for his clinical acumen and ethical conduct by colleagues, supervisors, and professional organizations.As a professor, Dr. Choi has taught a wide array of undergraduate and graduate courses across several minority-serving institutions, including Asian American psychology, career development, counseling skills, introductory and advanced statistics, public health, and research methods. Trained in transformative pedagogy and inclusive teaching practices, he is committed to advancing educational equity and mobility for students of color. Dr. Choi also plays an active role in consultation, clinical supervision, and professional development, having designed and led practicum programs and successfully mentored multiple cohorts of trainees into competitive APA-accredited internships.
