As a lab assistant on the PANDA (Prediction of At Risk NeuroDevelopmental Abnormalities) Study, I contributed to an interdisciplinary research effort focused on developing early detection tools for neurodevelopmental disabilities in infants using mobile sensing and machine learning. My role primarily involved working on the mechanical engineering and hardware development team as well as software development, where I assisted in the design, prototyping, and assembly of sensor integrated infant toys used in the PANDA Gym. These toys collect rich movement data by measuring how infants both typically and atypically developing interact with their environment during play.In collaboration with researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine, Department of Bioengineering, and CHOP’s Division of Rehabilitation Medicine, I also worked across teams to ensure seamless integration of physical systems with data collection protocols, supporting the broader mission of creating a scalable, non-invasive, and affordable platform for early intervention in at-risk populations. This project not only deepened my understanding of human centred design, pediatric rehabilitation technology, and sensor instrumentation but also gave me insight into the translational power of engineering in clinical research.
