ABOUT AXEL DESSEIN

I specialise in Chinese language, politics, and history; and completed a dissertation on China’s rise to power in 2024. Previously, I have worked in research, editorial, as well as teaching roles in a variety of fields ranging from the world of diplomacy to defence and education; and at institutions in Belgium, China, Taiwan, the UK, and Ireland.Professionally, I engage daily within the fields of comparative and international education, conducting open-source research into historical and contemporary education systems of Northwest Europe, as well as East and Southeast Asia, including Bhutan, India, China, and Sri Lanka.I also frequently work with incomplete (or partially completed) awards, as well as short courses and micro-credentials. One of my reports on the topic was recently published, here: background is firmly in China Studies, exploring anything related to the research and teaching of Chinese language and identity, politics, and history. Additionally, I have developed some amount of expertise on: • Chinese and Taiwanese politics • Chinese foreign policy and grand strategy• Chinese imperial history from the Yuan onwards • East Asian and Pacific security • East and South China Seas security, including Taiwan • War studies.
