SKILLS
ABOUT AVRIL USSERY SISK NACD.
I\'m a board member, governance expert, and thought leader. My interests include AI governance and the intersection between AI, cybersecurity, and privacy, as well as the transformation of work, culture, and the competition for talent. Noted for my strategic edge and advanced EQ, I am both a leader and collaborative force in the boardroom. As a member of the Executive Committee on the board of a privately held information technology company, I advised on B2G and B2B commerce, marketing, and sales through the development of private and public partnerships. In addition, I provided oversight of government relationship strategies to drive significant revenue and a successful acquisition exit. I currently serve as Chair, NACD Capital Area Chapter Advisory Board and am on the Athena Alliance Advisory Board. This year, I was invited to serve on the Advisory Committee to develop NACD’s 2025 Master Class: Technology & Innovation and participated as a panelist on the topics of AI governance and technology regulatory issues, particularly those relating to AI. I\'m a published author and am frequently invited to speak from a director’s perspective about my experience regarding these topics, exploring the implications of AI governance, adoption, and regulations on business, particularly regarding directors’ oversight and strategic responsibilities. With state and federal regulatory experience, I contextualize and assess impacts on business operations in dynamic regulatory environments. I served on a hospital medical ethics board and promoted passage of legislation permitting DNR orders in North Carolina. As an independent director, I have monitored risk management, compliance, regulatory, and ethics activities supporting strategic imperatives. A former mediator, I have exercised oversight while fostering positive and effective business cultures. I consult to company boards of directors and advise a variety of clients relating to AI governance and adoption, and private company governance issues.A certified Leadership Professional in Ethics and Compliance (LPEC), I have served in a variety of leadership roles including Chair, Economic Development Commission, in public policy, and in state governments. During my tenure as EDC Chair, the first “Smart City” in the U.S. with new 5G digital infrastructure was established in Arlington, VA.
