I’ve always wished there was a better term for “deliverables.” Too often that word narrows efforts just to meet specifications. For me, that’s not good enough for three reasons. First, I think metrics are great starting points. I want to go beyond what we were asked to do for a very practical, and strongly ROI-based, idea. When I lead my teams to deliver more than expected, we’ll meet not just today’s challenges, but tomorrow’s as well. That scalability means we and all our customers, internal and external, will never have to fix the same problem more than once. I get there by anticipating what our customers would long for if only they had our technical expertise and energy. The result? Genuine, and very profitable, sustainability. Second, I’m driven to deliver success, as my team defines that word. That requires me to do what I do best: listen—really listen—to every team member. It’s up to me to help each one draw the straight lines between what they do and how they will make a difference tomorrow as much as today. Finally, everything we do must meet all our customers’ demands so we can guide them to success as both we and they define that word. When we do that, one day at a time, I gain satisfaction that goes far beyond the bottom line. I want those same rewards for all our customers and everybody I work with and for.
