As a community liaison for individuals suffering from mental illnesses, Avi Mendlowitz has dedicated his expertise, time and energy to help people in need. Serving as a volunteer member for the Hatzolah ambulance organization for the past 21 years, he has witnessed firsthand the challenges and difficulties that those seeking mental health assistance must overcome.To provide additional, targeted support, Avi spearheaded the creation of a specialized unit of volunteers, entitled PFR (Psychiatric First Responders), who are trained by professional psychiatrists and therapists on the correct procedures and methods that should be utilized in a psychiatric emergency.From the time of the call, throughout the evaluation, and after the placement for treatment, Avi maintains the highest level of confidentiality to protect the patient’s right to privacy and ensures that the patient is receiving optimum care for his condition. If he does not need hospital admission, if required, Avi will transport him to a psychiatrist for immediate evaluation and treatment.If a patient requires admission to a psychiatric unit, Avi provides guidance as to the best facility, as well as establishes and maintains constant contact with physicians to ensure that the family is updated regarding treatment and decisions. Avi makes certain that there is an adequate plan upon discharge to ensure that patient continues to receive the care they need from therapists and doctors to support them in their return to a stable life, offering his direction and suggestions every step of the way.
