I\'ve worked at The Utah Statesman since my first semester in college, and the experiences gained have been beyond valuable. I’m honored to lead this incredible organization as the managing editor, where I organizing a team of 6 editors and their reporters, photographers and copy editors. When I was lifestyles editor, I assigned the reporters weekly story ideas, got them in touch with the right sources, ensured I was always available for questions, edited their writing with feedback to improve and designed the print pages the stories occupy weekly.My responsibilities include:• Leading weekly meetings• Assigning relevant and timely projects • Getting editors in touch with the right sources• Editing reporter\'s writing with helpful feedback • Designing pages where the articles occupy weekly • Populating stories on our website • Planning activities and events for employees to attend • Ensuring I am always available for questions outside of my office hours • Designer and editor of the 2024 Highlander magazine• Always performing tasks with the utmost integrity and honesty in AP style

ABOUT AVERY TRUMAN
Hello! My name is Avery, and I’m a writer with a mission to communicate environmental science and astronomy. I attend Utah State University where I dual major in environmental studies and geography with a minor in unmanned aerial systems. I love working as the executive communications intern at the National Geographic Society where I get to tell stories from around the world. As a writing intern at NASA Goddard, I interviewed scientists and engineers to create articles that resonate with large audiences on nasa.gov. I am the managing editor of The Utah Statesman, where I’ve learned from every moment leading my team and keeping USU students informed. I’m working towards my professional GIS certificate.Before working for NGS or NASA, I had a passion for science and astronomy that stemmed from my grandpa and late nights he spent teaching me about the universe. Getting to study abroad on The Great Barrier Reef inspired me to write about the intersections between space, the ocean, the environment, and science. Now more than ever, it’s vital that we safeguard our planet. My job is to bridge the gap of understanding between scientists and the public. Working in science communications to make knowledge accessible has been a rewarding journey.I earned my Part 107 drone license to expand my understanding of how remote sensing data is obtained and utilized. I made this, and environmental research, the theme of the 2024 Highlander magazine I designed and edited for The Statesman.
