About Avelo Cohen
I am currently a senior studying Materials Science and Engineering with a minor in Electrical Engineering at the University of Michigan. I am passionate about research and innovation and have been recognized for my academic excellence earning University Honors, Dean’s List, and James B Angell Scholar distinctions.Currently, I am working as a Lab Assistant at the Goldman Group research lab at the University of Michigan, where I research spin transfer torque in gallium arsenide bismide (GaAsBi) involving photolithography, ion milling, electron beam evaporation. I am also working with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope to examine surface energies of semiconductor samples. Previously, I interned at Pratt and Whitney, characterizing defects in advanced airplane engine materials. My intern project consisted of automating CT calibration, reducing the manual analysis time to calibrate the machine. I also quantified the impact of binning detector pixels, showing that about 30% more pores can be resolved with a binned detector. At Advanced Thermal Batteries, I analyzed thermal hot spots and conducted fault tree failure analysis.I have also taken on teaching roles, such as being a Writing Fellow for an introductory materials science class. Additionally, as a Teaching Assistant for the Johns Hopkins University Explore Engineering Innovation program, I taught high school students general engineering concepts and basic computer programming. At the University of Michigan, I am the Finance Lead for Blue Lab Woven Wind, successfully managing a budget and applying for grants for our student-run organization that builds wind turbines for elementary schools. I also led the Transmission Sub-team, organizing meetings, utilizing CAD for modeling, and completing the manufacturing of our first turbine post-pandemic.As an active participant in our community, I am a LEAD Scholar, a member of the University of Michigan Men’s Club Hockey team, and a certified Hockey Official.
