Chief Executive Officer
The Empowerment Experiment Foundation Inc
Jan 2008 — Present
In 2008, I conceived of a real-life case study to prove the power or business diversity and inspire more racial and economic unity, empowerment and understanding. Northwestern University agreed to partner with my family for this historic experiment, which would later be called “The Empowerment Experiment.” Then in 2009, inspired by President Obama’s election, my time as his law student, as civil rights hero Congressman Lewis’ aide, and as a corporate executive serving McDonald’s Corporation first and only Black CEO, I publicly pledged to exclusively support Black owned businesses for an entire year. All the major news outlets covered our journey and sacrifice. My family was threatened. There was no Black owned grocery store. I was raising two toddlers. And my mother was dying of cancer.I saved the receipts and documented the journey from my history-making stand AKA ‘The Empowerment Experiment’. That research and evidence became the foundation for the first ever real life case study in community economics sponsored by the Kellogg Graduate School of Management and curated by me. My landmark study proved 1 million jobs could be created if these Black owned businesses received a small increase in support. The study appears in my book, “Our Black Year: One Family’s Quest to Buy Black in America’s Racially Divided Economy\". After the year and while the study was being conducted, my family founded The Empowerment Experiment Foundation to memorialize the historic project and continue the DEI research, programming and advocacy.
