About Austen Groener
Austen Groener is an Applied Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision Scientist at Amazon in the greater Boston area. His research interests include deep learning object detection, instance/semantic segmentation, explainable AI (XAI), neural network model compression techniques, and active and online learning. Formerly, Austen was a Staff Autonomy and Artificial Intelligence Research Engineer at Lockheed Martin Space where he worked on advancing the state-of-the-art performance in automated target recognition (ATR) using satellite imagery. He was also the editor-in-chief of the LM Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Journal. His prior experience at Lockheed Martin included leading a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) algorithm and software development group, along with extensive experience in anomaly detection, electronic protection (EP) of autonomous systems, and ground processing of novel smallsat SAR payloads. Austen obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from Drexel University where he studied the detailed distribution of dark matter within galaxy clusters extracted from both astronomical observations and large N-body gravitational simulations of the universe. He obtained his M.S in Physics from Drexel University, and holds a Bachelor’s in Physics with minors in Mathematics and Geology from Hartwick College.
