ABOUT AURELIO MAGGIO
Internationally renowned Hematologist and researcher with expertise in rare blood disorders, particularly thalassemias and hemoglobinopathies. Extensive experience leading groundbreaking research, including prenatal diagnosis techniques, gene therapy, and the identification of beta-thalassemia mutations. Collaborated extensively with top institutions worldwide (John Hopkins, Columbia University, Karolinska Institute, Howard Hughes Institute) resulting in over 240 publications (h-index 42, citations). Founder of the International Working Group on Thalassemia. Currently Scientific Director of the Fondazione Cutino, Director of the U.O.C. of Hematology for Rare Diseases at A.O.O.R.\"Villa Sofia-Cervello,\" and a member of the EuroBloodNet ERN. Principal investigator roles in numerous large-scale, international, multicenter clinical trials, including AIFA-funded sequential deferasirox-deferiprone therapy studies, and phase 1b, 2b, and 3 studies evaluating novel therapies for sickle cell disease and beta-thalassemia (e.g, luspatercept, crizanlizumab, mitapivat, ruxolitinib). Director of ongoing research projects including investigations into COVID-19 in patients with rare blood disorders (EuroBloodNet), genetic predictors of COVID-19 recovery, and novel treatments for retinitis pigmentosa. Holder of three patents related to gene therapy and beta-thalassemia diagnosis
