ABOUT ATUL KAMATH
Ophthalmologist, environmental sustenance in healthcare and innovator Eye surgeon, reducing carbon footprint from health sector, developing artificial cornea I am a passionate ophthalmologist and dedicated researcher with a strong commitment in applying my knowledge in research clinically in my field of ophthalmology. At the beginning of my career, I was fortunate to win two ICMR-STS fellowships under the guidance of two exceptional mentors (Dr. Sucheta Kumari & Dr Ramaprakash) for which I was awarded the Leela Krishnamurthi award. After my MBBS I pursued my post-graduation in ophthalmology at Shri M P Shah Government College, Jamnagar where I completed my thesis under the Head of Department Dr Devdutt J Gohel in the topic of Thyroid Ophthalmopathy. My fellowship in phacoemulsification and anterior segment surgery at Sankara Academy of Vision was a blessing in disguise. Under the mentorship of Dr J K Reddy I conducted two research studies, one pertaining to environmental sustenance in health sector and one more in the field in cornea. From then I am steadily pursuing innovation and research in these two areas. With FAICO in cornea I am working on developing an artificial corneal endothelium which will potentially revolutionize the field of corneal endothelial transplant. My work is characterized by rigorous and thorough literature search and innovative approaches in ophthalmology. Over the course of my career, I have demonstrated a consistent ability to tackle clinical problems and deliver impactful results. My research has provided practical solutions to clinical issues. One such practical solution was simple taping of eyes of unconscious patients admitted in ICU during covid pandemic due to which we were able to prevent blindness in innumerable number of comatose patients. This paper fetched me a travel bursary to the annual European Society of Cataract and Refractive surgeons (ESCRS) conference held in Vienna in 2023. I was also awarded the AIOS Ophthalmic hero award at AIOC 2024. With over surgeries in different specialities, mainly cataract, corneal transplants and trauma cases and a reviewer in Indian journal of Ophthalmology underscore my dedication to patient care, research and innovation. I am a member of many national and internatioanl societies including AIOS, ESCRS, APACRS, CSI and KOS.
