About Athir Mahmud

Dr. Mahmud holds over two decades of teaching and leadership/management in higher education, focusing on computer science, human-computer interaction, graphic design, and visual communication design. Her time in the classroom surrounds a number of modalities, including traditional face-to-face settings, online, hybrid, and weekend intensive hybrid courses. She is interested in topics related to creativity, technology and personal privacy, human rights, and methods in which these can be visually portrayed. Dr. Mahmud is available for speaking engagements locally, nationally, and internationally. Dr. Mahmud received her Ph.D. in Technical Communication from Illinois Tech where she researched and transformed a mass of numbers into beautiful art. Her research focuses on creating information visualization techniques that portray social media data related to online identity. Dr. Mahmud is also a visual artist and has an extensive background in computer science, technology, higher education, consulting, and public speaking. She works in a variety of disciplines while using an interdisciplinary approach. This includes the visual and fine arts, computer science, information visualization, technology communication, media, and digital arts.In addition to practical design and theoretical research, Dr. Mahmud is highly experienced in designing online curricula for higher educational institutions. She is especially skilled in creating online curricula for complex and dense topics, including those in STEM and STEAM disciplines.Dr. Mahmud is a strong proponent of the fusion of the theoretical, aesthetic, experimental and practical approaches to research. She is especially passionate about design as it relates to international audiences, accessibility, and older populations.
