ABOUT ATHENA COOPER

Athena is a fine art painter, illustrator, writer and creativity coach who uses art-making practices to help others explore, grow and heal.Born with the rare genetic disorder, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (aka ‘brittle bone disease’), and a wheelchair user since the age of six, she has seen how her art practice has helped her process and navigate the world as a disabled person. She believes that anyone can benefit from having a creative practice—regardless of whether they consider themselves to be “artistic“—and that through creativity we can better connect with ourselves and with each other. Athena is the 2023 Winner of the Won Lee Prize, celebrating creative excellence among Canadian visual artists living with disabilities. She recently illustrated a picture book by Anne Carter called \"The Perfect Ride\" about a child who uses a wheelchair in search of the perfect winter sledding experience. The book is set to be published in early 2027 by Toronto\'s Owl Kids Books and has received the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts and Calgary Arts Development.
