About Athanasios Karamalidis

My professional and research passion is resource recovery (specialized on critical elements); geochemistry of rare earth elements; extraction, separation and recovery of critical elements from unconventional sources; functionalization chemistry; hydrometallurgy; chemical separations.I have also worked extensively on other topics: shale gas operations geochemistry; geochemical phenomena under CO2 sequestration conditions in geologic formations, groundwater and shallow aquifers; water chemistry; fate and transport of chemicals in water, soil, and sediment; in situ and ex situ soil and sediment treatment; hazardous waste site remediation; geochemical modeling of aquatic systems.

Experience

  1. Co-founder & CEO CTO

    Anactisis

Jun 2015 — Present · Pittsburgh, PA, US

Anactisis revolutionizes the recovery of critical minerals to empower the global economy. By leveraging innovative solvent-free separation technology we are creating a new era of resource independence and supply chain resilience. Our mission is to secure economic sovereignty, enhance national security, and drive technological innovation by harnessing critical elements abundantly contained within industrial waste.Anactisis, a Carnegie Mellon University spinoff, has developed extraction and separation technologies for the recovery of Germanium and Scandium, among other, from mining tailings and industrial resources, such as titanium oxide sluice, coal fly ash, and others. The industries we serve include, defense and aerospace, semiconductors and electronics, advanced manufacturing and additive technologies and other.Anactisis has been supported by NSF, US DOE, US DOD (and other organizations) to build pilot units for Germanium and Scandium extraction, with a strong trajectory to scale up its production capabilities.Anactisis conceived, founded and is proud managing member of the SCORE consortium. A consortium building US-based supply chains for critical minerals, starting with Scandium.
