About Atam Dhawan

Atam Dhawan has held faculty positions in Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Radiology departments at University of Houston, University of Cincinnati, University of Texas at Arlington, and University of Texas Medical Center (Dallas). At NJIT, he has served as Chair, Elect. & Comp. Engineering and Interim Dean of Albert Dorman Honors College. Currently he is Senior VP-Research, Distinguished Professor and Executive Director of Undergraduate Research and Innovation. Dr. Dhawan is a Fellow of National Academy of Inventors, Fellow of Fellow of American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, and Fellow of International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering.Dr. Dhawan serves as the Chair, NIH Point-of-Care Research Network (POCTRN) Independent Expert Board of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, National Institutes of Health (NIH) He has published over 215 research papers and several books in medical imaging,image analysis and pattern recognition. His patented optical Nevoscope technology has been commercialized through Translite and 3-GEN companies for dermatological applications. He is a recipient of numerous awards including Martin Epstein Award (1984), NIH FIRST Award (1988), Sigma-Xi Young Investigator Award (1992), EMBS Early Career Achievement Award (1995), Doermann Distinguished Lecture Award EMBS Distinguished Lecturer award (20••••13) and EMBS William J. Morlock Award in Excellence in Biomedical Technology (2021). He served as the Conference Chair of the 28th International Conference of Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (2006) and 42nd International Conference of Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (2020). He has organized and chaired the International Conferences on Point- of-Care Technologies and Healthcare Innovation in Bangalore, India (2013), and in Seattle (2014), co-chaired the NIH- Strategic Conference on Point-of-Care Technologies for Precision Medicine in Bethesda (2015) and in Cancun (2016) and co-chaired 2017 Special Topics Conference on Healthcare Innovation and Point-of-Care Technologies in Bethesda. He has been an EMBS Distinguished Lecturer and has given numerous invited talks worldwide. Dr. Dhawan has chaired numerous NIH Special Study Sections and NIH BTRR Site Visit Review Panels. He served as the Chair of NIH Chartered Study Section on Biomedical Computing and Health Informatics (2008-11). He is listed in Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Engineering, and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
