Public Relations Chair @The Hispanic Latine Student Union
Tallahassee, FL, US
As the Public Relations Chair for the Hispanic/Latine Student Union at Florida State University, I am responsible for shaping and maintaining the agency’s public voice. HLSU represents approximately 24-25% of the entire student population, and my communication efforts ensure that this community is accurately and thoughtfully represented. I develop clear and strategic messaging that highlights the interests, concerns, and achievements of our students while promoting our programs, initiatives, and collaborations. I also amplify the work of our 26 affiliated organizations, making sure their events and contributions receive the visibility and support they deserve. In addition to managing the agency’s presence across various platforms, I take the lead in writing formal statements when important or sensitive issues arise, ensuring that our position is communicated with professionalism and care. My goal in this role is to strengthen the connection between the agency, its affiliates, and the broader campus community by delivering communication that remains consistent, accessible, and reflective of the students we serve.

ABOUT ASTRYD MACHADO
As a first-generation college student at Florida State University, I am double majoring in Economics and International Affairs with a concentration in Political Science. My academic interests lie in understanding the global economic landscape, political dynamics, and their real-world effects on communities—especially those that are underrepresented or underserved.I’m proud to be part of FSU’s Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement (CARE), a program that has provided critical mentorship and financial support throughout my college journey. I hold two roles within CARE: Student Assistant and Summer Bridge Program Ambassador. As a Student Assistant, I support office operations and provide a welcoming environment for students seeking guidance and resources. Now, as a Summer Bridge Ambassador, I give back by mentoring incoming first-generation students during their six-week transition into college life—an experience I once navigated myself.Professionally, I’ve gained extensive experience in customer-facing roles through positions at ZARA, Bed Bath & Beyond, Dillard’s, and currently Proof Brewing Company. These opportunities have sharpened my skills in communication, problem-solving, and adaptability, all of which I bring to every professional setting.I served as a Reception Placement Intern at the International Rescue Committee in Tallahassee, where I support refugees and immigrants by connecting them with essential resources and services. This role has deepened my passion for human rights and nonprofit work.On campus, I have been involved in the Puerto Rican Student Association (PRSA), where I’ve served as Public Relations Chair, Secretary, and Internal Vice President. Through PRSA, I helped organize cultural events, lead member engagement initiatives, and celebrate Puerto Rican heritage at FSU.Currently, I serve as the Public Relations Chair for the Hispanic/Latine Student Union on campus. I keep all of our affiliates the entire Hispanic/Latin population at FSU up to date with any important information. It is an honor to serve my community in this way. My goal is to continue to serve my community with professional experience and education in economics. Economics is a crucial skill to have at every scale: macro and micro. Driven by my background and values, I’m committed to using my education and experiences to empower others and contribute meaningfully to my community and beyond.
