Election Commissioner of India since 23rd January, 2018. Retired from Indian Administrative Service in Oct 2017 as Union Finance Secretary. Earlier, worked as Union Secretary Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change and also Ministry of Civil Aviation.Rich leadership experience of over 37 years.Known for contribution to good governance and policy reform initiatives taken while in service in Government.Experienced international negotiator having led the Indian team during the PARIS AGREEMENT on Climate Change in December, 2015 besides the Montreal Protocol, the Conventions on Biodiversity and Desertification. Was Finance Secretary, when many reforms like GST and merger of Railway Budget with General Budget, were undertaken. As Environment Secretary initiated far reaching and wide ranging policy and procedural reforms in environmental regulation.Earlier, worked in the Ministry of Power, Ministry of Home Affairs and Department of Economic Affairs (Ministry of Finance) in Govt. of India and Managing Director, State Industrial & Infrastructure Development Corporation and Tourism Corporation, in the state Govt. Before joining the IAS, taught in Delhi University as a lecturer and worked as Probationary Officer in State Bank of India.Born on 21st October 1957. BA (English Honours) and MA in English Literature from Delhi University. MBA from Southern Cross University, New South Wales and M.Phil (Defence and Strategic Studies).Received the International Alumnus Impact Award in 2019 from Southern Cross University, Australia, Earlier Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2015, Life Time Achievement Award in 2018, Alumnus of the Decade Award in 2019 was conferred by the Hindu College Old Students Association. Avid photographer, held several exhibitions of photographs in different cities. keen interest in adventure activities such as trekking, river rafting and parasailing and sports such as tennis, cricket and swimming. Authored a book \'AN UNCIVIL SERVANT\', published by Rupa in 2006.
