Combat Systems Engineer @BAE Systems

View department →

Portsmouth, GB

Working back on the UK Lighting Integration team. The team is responsible for de-risking the F-35 Lightning II Joint Combat Aircraft as it starts to operate within the UK environment. As part of these activities a number of engineering trial events are conducted at BAE Systems Maritime Integration Support Centre (MISC) based on Portsdown Hill overlooking Portsmouth Harbour. These events generate a large number of engineering items that require action and a database of those actions is an extremely fluid artifact which I have been given responsibility to manage. I have introduced a number of new processes which allow the UKLI team to progress their actions much more thoroughly and reduce the number of open actions.

ABOUT ASHLEY ASH STRAW

I am a Systems Engineer with two decades of industry experience specialising in the requirements management and battlespace architecture of complex IT and combat systems for the global defence and aerospace sectors and 5 years of Royal Naval experience in the warfare branch. I have provided a high level of professionalism and impact to the projects I have worked on, often being seconded to various sub-sections of those projects as someone who is able to “get things done”. I have worked on two of the highest value projects within the MoD, the Queen Elizabeth aircraft carriers and the F-35 Lightning II Joint Combat Aircraft with high success in both projects. I have managed and lead the initiation of the BAE Systems Naval Ships Combat Systems Higher Apprenticeship scheme, recruiting the first cohort and managing them through their course, including the management of all other early careers personnel within Naval Ships Combat Systems. I have a current SC clearance. I enjoy a challenge, particularly involvement in projects at an early stage where my experience in the defence industry and the Royal Navy can guide decisions to provide a solution that customers both need and can utilise. I have excellent inter-personal and communication skills which have enabled me to retain relationships through-out my working life and ensure that I always have the contacts necessary to succeed.
