ABOUT ASHISH TANNA
I have been working in the field of material science since more than one decade. I have developed software on the calculation of X-ray diffraction intensity analysis for spinel compounds for the determination of the cation distribution among the tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (B) interstitial sites. This work was supported by DST, India and presented in the International Conference on Computational Physics at Madrid, Spain. I have also worked on Swift heavy ion irradiation (SHII) on some spinel ferrites materials to study the ion beam mixing of phases through irradiation at IUAC, New Delhi, India. Presently, I am working on synthesis and characterization of new magnetic materials with layered structures in which the coupling interaction between different ferromagnetic substances can produce an interesting effect. These materials exhibit interplay between lattice distortions and magnetic ordering. I have synthesized different ferrites and their composites and measure structural, magnetic and electric properties before and after prolonged mechanical ball milling. High energy mechanical milling process gives interesting results of magneto transport properties. I have also checked effect of the John- Teller distortion due to Cu2+(3d9) cations in the spinel ferrite. The John- Teller Cu2+ ions can cause cubic to tetragonal distortion in ferrite phase; this creates stress that is additional to the stress which is caused by application of magnetic field, so it can bring about strong magnetic coupling. Therefore, I am interested to synthesis new magnetic materials with layered structure which are highly sensitive to the geometry of structure and generate possibilities of new engineering applications.
