ABOUT ARUN VENKATARAMAN
Long-time Googler with deep passion for building a stronger information ecosystem - one that can empower communities across the world to better meet the challenges of the 21st century.I\'ve had the great privilege to spend much of my career at Google focused on addressing critical challenges the news ecosystem faces, from sustainability to misinformation. I currently manage the Google News Initiative\'s Global Industry Research Partnerships. Previously, I launched and co-led the GNI Digital Growth Program, a global effort to help publishers succeed in the digital age. I also spent 2 years overseeing a multi-million dollar commitment to the news industry in Latin America, spearheading our work focused on emerging business models, digital media literacy, and support for digital native news organizations. I got my start at Google working on the Chief Marketing Officer\'s Global Strategy team, which provided a unique lens to understand how large companies operate at an executive-level and technology\'s evolving role in society. Through that time, I’ve been humbled by the staggering challenges involved in building a more informed world but am also consistently inspired by the tremendous intelligence, passion and energy of so many, so deeply invested in tackling this problem. It\'s a problem I have a deep personal connection to. Growing up as an Indian American in a diverse and culturally rich Texas suburb left me with a deeply-held belief that democracies -when open, free and robust - can lead to a deeper shared understanding of each other and the issues we collectively face. I\'ve tried to keep that spirit close to my heart and it motivates a lot of the work I\'ve done since.Along the way, I’ve had stints in management consulting, founded and built an online media startup, and done a lot of creative writing. I have a deep passion for and interest in film, theater, history and politics. Culturally, I feel deeply rooted in both Texan and Tamil traditions. And, as a consequence, somewhat tortuously, I’ve been a lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Indian National Cricket team :)
