About Arlene Perez

My purpose in life is to create technology that makes a difference in this world. To me, the ultimate goal is not to create a product but to create a change!Being raised by two Mexican immigrants, I know the true value of a great education by becoming the first in my family to graduate from college. I decided to join Teach for America in Washington D.C. as a middle school math teacher where I taught math entirely in Spanish to an amazing group of students who came from diverse backgrounds. It gave me the opportunity to notice the positive impact a Latina role model can have on their academic success.Unfortunately, through this experience, I also saw the lack of Latinos in STEM education. Because of this, my ultimate drive is continuously striving to increase minority representation in the tech field. I am always advocating for more students to fall in love with STEM topics whether through math class, robotics or learning coding. By being featured in the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics Heritage Month Teacher Profile, recognized by Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti as well as in Univision\'s Puente al Futuro Special for leading a robotics team with my students in East Los Angeles, I was able to increase awareness around this issue. Currently, I have learned Ruby on Rails, Javascript, MySQL, Postgres, CSS and HTML to further continue my passion of coding. I am a recent Facebook F8 Scholar graduate of Dev Bootcamp in San Francisco and I would love to continue my dream of helping more students master Math as a software developer because they are the next generation of mathematicians, developers and leaders.
