About Arlene Farrar

I have been in the EHS field for > 35 years (Yes, I did graduate early from college!) My career began doing Superfund work for EPA Region V under the FIT contract, and then 14 forming years with the Waste Management/Chemical Waste Management family of companies. I joined Waste Management as an Environmental Auditor. I was the EHS Manager for Trade Waste Incineration, a commercial hazardous waste incineration facility, when I left about 14 years later. The transition to the medical device field included exposure to world-wide operations while I was the Global EHS Manager for Bausch & Lomb\'s newly created Surgical Division (lasers for Lasik surgery & cataract equipment). I was introduced to the world of Global EHS and the EU Directives of RoHS, etc. I was responsible for facilities in the US, France, Germany and Amsterdam.I returned to the Chicago area in 2006 as Sr. EHS Director for a contract sterilization company (Sterigenics), focusing on Process Safety for Ethylene Oxide, E-beam and Gamma facilities in the US, Canada and Mexico. I had the privilege of establishing the EHS programs for Fenwal, now Fresenius Kabi.(Fenwal sold blood collection/processing equipment globally - divested from Baxter.) I established the EHS audit program, Product Stewardship (EPR, ROHS), all EHS manual/procedures, obtained ISO14001 & OHSAS18001 group certifications and participated in risk management activities. I supported facilities in the Caribbean (PR & DR) Europe (Germany, France, Poland, Italy, Czech Rep) China, and Tunisia. Learning about the Food Industry occupied the next 3 years of my career. I was a Safety Director at ConAgra Brands, supporting 26 US facilities which made household staples such as Slim Jims, microwave popcorn, Chef Boyardee ravioli, Hebrew National Hot Dogs, Reddi Wip, and others. I returned to the medical device field with Abbott in 2017. I led the Diagnostic business in EHS, Product Stewardship and Product Safety with the assistance of 14 great professionals. In March 2021, I transitioned to the Corporate Global EHS team, where I now get to provide specialized EHS support to all divisions in Abbott. Specialties:EHS Auditing, Compliance, ISO14001/45001, PSM, Hazardous Waste, Incineration, Ethylene Oxide, Bloodborne Pathogen, medical devices and Lean Principles.
