Obtaining a job as a lifeguard began with a genuine passion of ensuring the safety of swimmers and being able to utilize my CPR and first-aid knowledge not only for those hurt in the pool, but throughout the entire gym. Following the completion of the Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Class with the YMCA (June 9th to 11th), we were taught various water rescue techniques, emergency protocol, and took both physical and written exams to ensure we were prepared to respond in an emergency situation. In just the summer of 2023, I worked for over 300 hours and have had the duties of closely monitoring both the lap and child pools, testing the chemicals of the pool to ensure adequate pH and Cl in pool, and responding to various emergency situations. As my first job, I feel very content with my decision to become a lifeguard and even occasionally help teach others how to swim as a swim instructor.
