ABOUT ARISHITA GUPTA

My favorite childhood story is centered around an interaction where I played with a young girl on the streets of India. While I do not remember much, my parents tell me that she and I became fast friends with endless conversations during that trip, an otherwise mundane occurrence except for one caveat: she was a Punjabi speaker who could not understand a word of English, and I was an English speaker who could not understand Punjabi. That story is like magic to me: the fact that two children from two different parts of the world could understand one another despite an obvious language barrier. But it was only the first of many ways I would see my world change via communication (and, in some cases, lack thereof). And it became clear that the entire world can be made or broken with communication. As an undergraduate, I decided to combine my existing Supply Chain Management path with Communication for this exact reason: both degrees offer me the opportunity to benefit the world. SCM gives me the opportunity to help make global sourcing strategies more ethical and sustainable, a necessity in our existing world. Communication not only complements the major, but also gives me new opportunities and knowledge to use one of the greatest skills we have as humans to facilitate better relationships, connections, and resolutions. Together, the two allow me to address and resolve issues at both macro and micro levels. I compounded upon those skills through my roles such as a News Editor, Equity Research Fellow, and an Assistant Residence Life Coordinator- all roles that put me in positions to both proactively and reactively respond to global and local crises. In the future, I hope to expand and apply all these skills by pursuing a career in investigative journalism and am actively looking for more positions that allow me to test and apply my knowledge to channels of legal, communication-related, and sustainability-oriented goals.
