ABOUT ARCHIE LOVATT
Archie Lovatt is a worldwide expert in biopharmaceutical, vaccine, gene & cell therapy biosafety testing. He graduated from University of Glasgow with a BSc (Hons) in Microbiology in 1990. He continued his studies at the Medical Sciences Institute, University of Leicester researching the genetic analysis of microbial virulence factors, & graduated with a PhD in molecular microbiology. In 1994, he was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute to genetically dissect transcriptional factors & investigate their role in CNS cellular differentiation. Between 19••••07, he was Scientific Director of Q-One/BioReliance/Invitrogen (Life Technologies Thermo) in Glasgow UK. He pioneered the development & implementation of Q-PCR/F-PERT/DNA sequencing for the biosafety testing of cell substrates & viral vectors/vaccines. During his 11 year tenure, he built & directed assay development, validation & testing teams, implemented Q-One & BioReliance global R&D pipeline into routine operations. Until 2005, he focused on molecular biology & virology divisions, with expertise in custom complex testing & routine lot release testing under GLP/cGMP compliance. He was a senior leader of BioReliance operations, R&D, regulatory, & custom complex business development. In 2007, Dr. Lovatt founded the world class, cGMP/GLP compliant, high growth CRO Vitrology (SGS Glasgow)(acquired by SGS in 2012) & served on the board as Scientific Operations Director, a position he holds to the present day. He was voted into the top 100 most influential people in human medicine development & manufacture. By 2024, he raised £80M+ investment, managed the high growth Vitrology business under SGS, delivering a new multi-phase expansion of 3,100m2 for SGS Health Sciences in Glasgow. He currently leads a highly specialised scientific group of ~170 FTE at this Global Centre of Excellence for cGMP /GLP testing all biologic medicines, & viral vaccines. This group played a major role in the COVID-19 worldwide vaccination program 2020-22. From development in Feb-20, to regulatory approval Dec 2020. By Dec-21, with accelerated pace, the group had executed the biosafety GMP testing of each vaccine batch allowing roll out of >4 billion vaccine doses (40% of the worldwide population). He is a USP scientific expert, & on the Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP) Working Party for British Pharmacopoeia
