About Aravind Subramaniam

Passionate about biodiversity, ecological research, and conservation, I have dedicated my career to understanding and protecting wildlife and ecosystems. With a Master’s degree in Environmental Science and hands-on experience in field research, I specialize in ecological surveys, species conservation, and environmental data analysis. Currently, I serve as a Freelance Consultant - Ecology at the United Way of Bengaluru (UWBe), where I contribute to projects focusing on species documentation through biodiversity assessments. I also work with the Centre for WIldlife Studies on various capacities to support their work on Illegal Wildlife Trade. My previous roles include working with the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology & the Environment (ATREE) supporting their work with the project Trees Outside Forests & metadata analysis of Fruiting plants in India. My work with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department on geospatial modeling for wildlife distribution and leading human-wildlife conflict studies. Beyond research, I actively engage in conservation initiatives, volunteering with organizations like the Students’ Sea Turtle Conservation Network and the Tamil Nadu Forest Department to protect endangered species and mitigate environmental threats.     Conducting literature review and data analysis on hunting practices across Asia, including spatial mapping, contributing to a meta-analysis.2. Assessing open-source trade and media datasets on illegal wildlife trade in India (10+ years), analysing trends and drivers, and co-contributing to a research paper.3. Supporting fieldwork in southern Odisha: assisted in questionnaire design, participated in surveys, gathered data on hunting, trade, and contributed to crime scripting and threat assessment.4. Applying technical tools including QGIS (shapefiles, toposheets, village-level mapping) and SMART Conservation Tools (camera trap data management).
