About April Allen
If there’s one thing I’m super passionate about – it’s the diversity of people. What motivates me to promote diversity and inclusion is the beauty and complexity of the human experience. So much value is added to people and businesses when they embrace diversity, including fostering compassion, engaging in critical thinking, teaching higher innovation, improving problem solving skills, lowering employee turnover, increasing creativity, maximizing profits and so much more!I’ve been fortunate enough to experience rare and unique professional opportunities such as being a local television diversity expert, organizing, leading and speaking at International Conferences; overseeing Relief Projects, supporting non-profits, managing business legal regulations, publishing children’s books like \"l Love Being Me,\" creating College Curriculums and so on. Still, my biggest professional accomplishment is teaching others how to foster a healthy, diverse and progressive environment in their sphere of influence. No matter your background or unique story, there are certain things that all humans have in common, and it’s those commonalities that make anyone relatable. This belief enables me to prepare others to work, converse, talk, play with or relate to people of diverse backgrounds. I’ve taught companies how to achieve cultural competency through training programs that drive powerful results – like increasing the hiring and promotion of POCs by 50%.I’ve helped Mothers, Fathers and Teachers tackle uncomfortable conversations about race and discrimination with their kids.I’ve taught children how to be kind to classmates who are different than them through my published books like \"It’s Nice to Be Nice.\" And I’m not above having a cup of coffee or tea with someone to address a controversial subject where we don’t see eye to eye. Diversity and Inclusion are not about uniformity in thought or self-denial. They are about respect, curiosity and courtesy for all people, even if their views, beliefs, socioeconomic status, orientation, educational background and inherit values are completely different than yours. Through my training, people learn how to celebrate and embrace others for who they are.
Experience
Adjunct Professor, Curriculum Design & Consultant
Jul 2017 — Present · Portland, OR, US
I led cross-cultural communication workshops internationally, facilitating effective collaboration between American and international staff. As a professor, I taught a range of courses, including introductory, upper-level, and Masters courses on American ethnic studies, cultural studies, political science, public administration, and law. I also trained students and educators on critical issues such as institutional racism, systemic oppression, and marginalization, equipping them with the awareness needed to address these challenges. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I designed and implemented certificate programs for Warner Pacific, ensuring they met the evolving needs of the academic community. I regularly developed curriculum for new classes, constantly enhancing the educational offerings available to students.
