Research in the Lakkaraju laboratory builds on fundamental insights from retinal cell biology to develop effective therapies for inherited and age-related macular degenerations (AMD), which cause irreversible blindness in millions of people worldwide and have limited therapeutic options. Using high-speed and high-resolution microscopy, novel genetic tools and animal models of disease, we have recently identified a group of clinically approved drugs that can be repurposed to treat macular degenerations.
