About Ana Paula Velasco
AP Velasco is the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. In this capacity, she provides communications and public affairs counsel to the Assistant Secretary, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, and other departmental leaders on engagements with the public, media, and other strategic communication equities. Her most recent work included orchestrating the 3-24 IN Memorial Ceremony, which honored the Soldiers of the All-Black 3rd Battalion, 24th Infantry after nearly a century of holding dishonorable discharges for their involvement in the Houston Riots of 1917. Ms. Velasco joined the Biden-Harris Administration as the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs in June. There, her portfolio included handling in-house media inquiries, community outreach efforts, and assisting with the Secretary of Defense’ public engagements. Prior to her appointment, Ms. Velasco worked at Trilligent, a subsidiary of APCO Worldwide. There she helped multiple Fortune 500 companies create communications strategies and policies in the people space. She served as a communications assistant during the Biden-Harris campaign to Dr. Jill Biden’s team in 2020. Ms. Velasco serves as the DC Regional Lead for the University of Texas’ Women’s Campaign School and previously served on the Alumni Board for Running Start and the Board of Directors for Advancing Latinas into Leadership. Originally from San Antonio, TX, Ms. Velasco holds a B.A. in international affairs from The George Washington University where she attended as a President’s Scholar. She is a recipient of the Army Civilian Service Commendation Medal.
