About Ahmed O Said
Dr. Ahmed Said is a mechanical engineer whose expertise lies in thermal sciences, combustion, fire and explosion phenomena, and material flammability, with a specialized focus on the safety of high-voltage (HV) battery systems.During his Ph.D. research, Dr. Said conducted in-depth experimental and analytical investigations into the failure mechanisms of lithium-ion battery energy storage systems. He developed novel diagnostic and experimental techniques to study thermal runaway dynamics in cylindrical and prismatic cells and to quantify key failure parameters such as onset temperatures, energetics, and the composition of ejected gases and debris. His research further explored thermal runaway propagation (cascading failure) across multi-cell clusters using various chemistries (LCO, NMC, LFP), and evaluated the effectiveness of fire suppression agents in mitigating and preventing cascading failure events.Following his doctoral work, Dr. Said completed postdoctoral research focused on battery safety and explosion dynamics, with an emphasis on the thermal and mechanical behavior of coin and cylindrical cells under abuse conditions. At Lucid Motors, Dr. Said leads the battery safety engineering activities throughout the product lifecycle — from concept and design to field investigation and second-life applications. He is responsible for establishing safety requirements, validation methodologies, and regulatory compliance (including UN 38.3 certification and global homologation FMVSS305a/R100.03). His work spans HV battery R&D, testing, and incident investigation, and he has contributed to multiple Lucid programs, including Lucid Air, Gravity, Midsize, and ESS.Through this experience, Dr. Said has developed strong technical leadership, forensic analysis, and project management skills, bridging fundamental research with applied engineering and real-world product safety.
