I founded the Community Power Network in 2011 to spread the success we had in Washington, D.C. developing a community of solar supporters nationally. In this role, I have provided technical assistance to hundreds of citizens and organizations around the country who are working to develop their own local solar projects. We also have developed state-based programs in D.C, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, and Florida that help communities launch their own co-ops and strengthen their local solar communities. ABOUT ANYA SCHOOLMAN
I am the Founder and Executive Director of Solar United Neighbors. We used to be called Community Power Network. We help people across the USA develop locally-owned renewable energy projects and fight for policies that support clean, local energy-especially rooftop solar. This effort was sparked in 2007 by my son and his friend. Concerned about climate change after seeing “An Inconvenient Truth”, they urged us to go solar. So we looked into it. We quickly learned that going solar was going to be more expensive and more complicated than we first thought. Realizing this, I told the boys, “if we’re going to go solar, we might as well do the whole neighborhood”. They went up and down the block to ask neighbors if they would be interested. The response was tremendous. This led to the creation of the Mt. Pleasant Solar Cooperative. Word of our effort spread throughout the District, leading us to create an umbrella organization, DC SUN to manage similar groups around the city. Fast-forward several years. Solar United Neighbors, a 501(c), now manages state-based programs in nine states and we are growing rapidly. We use the expertise we’ve gained developing these programs to help groups across the country implement locally-owned renewable energy and fight for good policy.
