About Anurag Sharma
With over 15 years of experience across some of the world’s leading technology organizations—Amazon, American Express, Walmart, and Athenahealth—I’ve built and scaled complex distributed systems that power critical business functions at massive scale. My journey has spanned greenfield product development, platform re-architecture, and modernization efforts—each requiring a deep understanding of systems thinking, stakeholder alignment, and end-to-end execution. At Amazon, I’m currently part of a greenfield initiative where we’re building a foundational platform from the ground up. It’s a rare opportunity to shape both the technical architecture and the team culture—from setting engineering standards and operational excellence to mentoring engineers and aligning with product and business stakeholders. The platform we’re building is designed for multi geography and multi business, with strong emphasis on high availability, and extensibility across markets and use cases.Previously at American Express, I contributed to the core Payment Network—designing systems that processed millions of real-time transactions daily, requiring extremely tight SLAs and resilience. At Walmart, I worked on one of the world’s largest e-commerce platforms, gaining hands-on experience with high-concurrency, highly available systems. At Athenahealth, I helped build a cloud-native messaging and communication platform that scaled to millions of messages per day, with strong focus on configurability and observability.Across roles, I’ve led efforts on microservice and event-driven architectures, stream processing with Kafka, and data modeling tuned to system access patterns and performance bottlenecks. I’ve worked extensively with both SQL and NoSQL stores—Oracle, Postgres, Cassandra, MongoDB, Elasticsearch—and designed systems that can scale horizontally while meeting SLAs for consistency, latency, and throughput. On the cloud front, I’ve leveraged the full AWS ecosystem—from ECS and MSK to RDS, DocumentDB, Lambdas, and CloudWatch—to build scalable and observable platforms. My experience spans a wide range of domains—payments, e-commerce, healthcare, security—each with its own unique constraints and priorities, whether it\'s low latency, data consistency, compliance, or operability. What remains constant is my drive to build platforms with strong non-functional characteristics, and to lead teams that care deeply about both engineering excellence and long-term impact.

Software Development Manager-iii
Sep 2024 — Present · Bengaluru, IN
I joined Amazon as an SDE to lead the technical foundation of a greenfield platform, and soon transitioned into an SDM role — taking on end-to-end ownership of both architecture and team building. This role has been a rare opportunity to start from early stage of product building: defining the system design, setting the technical direction, and assembling a high-performing team to build a distributed system that’s expected to operate at Amazon scale.Along the way, I’ve shifted from being a senior individual contributor to a people+tech leader — driving hiring, mentoring engineers, setting up team processes, and working closely with cross-org stakeholders to align on product and platform goals.
