About Antony Schwartz
Dr. Antony Schwartz, PhD, CBSP(ABSA), SM(NRCM), is currently the Director, Biological Safety Division and Assistant Director, Occupational and Environmental Safety Office at Duke University. Antony holds an appointment as an Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, Duke School of Medicine. The Biological Safety Division has oversight of Duke University, three Duke Hospitals and over 200 Duke Clinics (Joint Commission Environment of Care Program). Antony serves as the Biosafety Officer for all of Duke University and the Duke University Health System managing the IBC and interfacing with IRB and IACUC on all biorisk management matters. Additionally, Antony leads the Duke Select Agent Program as the Responsible Official and is the Institutional Contact for Dual Use Research (ICDUR).Previously, he served as the Responsible Official for the National Institutes of Health Select Agent Program in Bethesda, Maryland. Prior to that, Antony was a post-doctoral Fellow of the National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program (NBBTP) Fellowship in-residence at the NIH, which, he entered after receiving his PhD in Microbiology and a graduate minor in Technology Commercialization. While in graduate school, Antony co-founded a successful niche marketing, branding and web-design company.Throughout his professional and graduate career, Antony has been expanding his leadership skills and experiences through various activities. He has been a member of ABSA International since 2011 with active participation in various committees and task forces. Antony is currently a Councilor (20••••23) and Reviewer on the Applied Biosafety Journal Editorial Board. Previously he has served as the Chair and past Co-Chair of the Pre-Conference Course Committee, Vice Team Lead for the Regulatory and Technical Affairs Team and Co-Chair for the inaugural ABSA Biosecurity Symposium Steering Committee. Additionally, Antony has served on the Education Curriculum Taskforce and the Membership Resources Taskforce. Antony’s interest areas include effective biosafety/biosecurity program management, global biosafety/biosecurity, understanding and practically applying technology to enhance biosafety/biosecurity and risk assessment of emerging infectious diseases and technologies. In graduate school, Antony served as the president and vice-president for the Graduate Student Forum and was a representative to the Graduate Student Senate.
