ABOUT ANTONIO GARCIA
Dr. García was the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in the College of Engineering and George W Lucky Professor of Chemical Engineering at new Mexico State University. He focused on expanding student learning by including professional, entrepreneurial, and interdisciplinary skill building. His technological expertise includes surface and colloid chemistry for diagnostics, drug delivery, and biomolecule identification and purification. His work has been published in a wide variety of chemistry, engineering, and biology journals including J. of Physical Chemistry, I & EC Research, Advanced Materials, Bioengineering, and J. of Microbiological Methods. In the 1990s, he co-authored the textbook Bioseparation Process Science (Blackwell Science). He was Associate Editor of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching 20••••05. His educational efforts in collaboration with faculty in the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Engineering were featured on the cover of Journal of Chemical Education (September issue). His research work with colleagues in engineering and sciences on combining surface chemistry and fractal texturing in order to move water drops using light was featured in Science News (August 2004). Most recently, he has been developing nanoparticle technology, portable opto-themal devices for drug delivery, and nanostructures to deliver sensors and diagnostics for Pre-Surveillance of infectious diseases. Some of work has been featured on the covers of the journals Analyst (May 2007), Advanced Materials (November 2008), and Macromolecules Rapid Communications (February 2010). With colleagues from the UNED and UCM (Madrid, Spain) the work on digital magnetofluidics was also featured in ScienceDaily (2006), and the work on “nanojewels” with colleagues from North Carolina State University was featured again in ScienceDaily (2008).
