About Anthony Weiss
I am a psychiatrist and former hospital executive studying how minds and institutions regulate themselves in complex technological societies. My work draws on ideas such as the extended mind and the brain economy, while developing new frameworks, including managerial allostasis.Psychiatry has traditionally treated the mind as something contained within the individual brain. Yet in everyday life, cognition and emotional regulation are deeply intertwined with relationships, institutions, and technologies. Understanding mental health increasingly requires understanding these extended systems of regulation, and the ethical questions they raise. My current work focuses on three themes:1. The Extended Mind and Mental HealthHow cognition and emotional regulation are distributed across brains, relationships, and technologies—and what this means for psychiatry and mental health care.2. Brain Health and the Brain EconomyThe human brain is our most energy-intensive and economically important organ. Brain health shapes productivity, creativity, and the capacity of societies to solve complex problems.3. Managerial AllostasisApplying insights from predictive neuroscience to understand how organizations anticipate demand, regulate resources, and remain adaptive under uncertainty.Across these areas, I am especially interested in the ethical governance of complex systems—how healthcare institutions, digital environments, and leadership structures can support safety, autonomy, and meaningful human functioning. Before returning to full-time academic work, I spent nearly two decades in hospital leadership, including 13 years in C-suite roles at major academic medical centers. That experience continues to shape my work on learning health systems, safety, and institutional design. At Harvard Medical School I:• Teach Creating Learning Organizations in Healthcare• Mentor trainees in medical ethics• Supervise psychiatry residentsI have authored 70+ peer-reviewed publications, reviewed for 25+ scientific journals, and serve as Deputy Editor of the Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety.I am especially interested in conversations and collaborations at the intersection of neuroscience, leadership, ethics, and the future of mental health in technological societies.TrainingMD — University of Wisconsin–MadisonMaster’s — Harvard Medical SchoolMBA — Babson College
