About Anthony J. Giordano

I am an international conservation scientist, entrepreneur, and social innovator with a background in research, wildlife ecology management, international project management, conservation program design, public and student education, and the use of technology to advance the protection of wildlife and wild spaces. I consider myself equal parts scientist, applied on-the-ground conservationist, wildlife liaison to the public at-large, and a problem-solver always seeking transformative, innovative ideas and solutions on a scale appropriately reflecting the complexity and challenges of today’s big conservation problems. I have nearly 30 years of experience working in more than as many countries on five continents, a passion for the conservation of carnivores and their roles as tools to connect large landscapes, an unwavering commitment to reconciling the needs of endangered species and local human communities, and a strong empirical interest in the ecology of tropical forests and savannas. To date I have published more than 100 scientific and popular articles and book chapters, written proposals in support of more than 100 projects, received more than 70 grants and awards, co-designed and managed nearly 40 projects of various size and scope, and helped design, implement, or direct dozens more. I pursue holistic, integrative projects that are based on science and evidence, and integrate elements of capacity-building, human-wildlife conflict mitigation, community participation, mentorship, strategic planning and design, and social and science advocacy. Public outreach is important to me, and I have led the discussion of more than 30 topics countless times to audiences in the U.S. and around the world, both online and in person. Professional development is also important, and I have closely advised or mentored 100\'s of students, and emerging and veteran conservation professionals, from 18 countries. Ultimately, I am most interested in building strong individual and institutional collaborations to implement projects that build toward institutional self-reliance and have lasting impacts. My greatest commitment is to those visionary strategies that disrupt the status quo and effect positive social and ecological change for carnivores, as they are not only the key to protecting the ecosystems they are an integral part of, they are also the key to protecting biodiversity generally, and to transforming development and agricultural supply chains on a global scale.
