CORONEO, a Montreal-based privately-held company, is a world leader in the development of novel cardiac implants for the aortic valve repair market. The company’s Extra-Aortic Annuloplasty Ring (ExAo) is the first aortic annuloplasty device to be specifically-designed to repair the aortic valve, and the first such device on the market after receipt of European regulatory approval (CE Mark). The great majority of regurgitant aortic valves are currently replaced with an artificial prosthetic heart valve, despite that the native cusps in these “leaky” valves are thin, pliable and therefore can be preserved. The Extra-Aortic Annuloplasty Ring is a disruptive repair technology that provides a less-invasive alternative to valve replacement with a cardiac prosthesis. The device repairs a regurgitant aortic valve by downsizing the dilated aortic root that prevented the native cusps from closing properly. As such, effective contact (coaptation) of the salvaged cusps is restored, and efficient valve closure is achieved. Since this device is implanted externally around the aortic root, it is not in contact with the patient’s systemic circulation, thereby avoiding the need for anticoagulation therapy and alleviating the risks associated with implants in contact with blood flow. Since the launch of its Extra-Aortic Annuloplasty Ring, CORONEO is strengthening its leadership position in the aortic valve repair market by developing derivatives to its Extra-Aortic family as well as complementary vascular implants and surgical instruments to facilitate such surgeries.
