About Ann B. McCollum

An accomplished and effective outdoor and classroom educator, Ann applies her teaching acumen to both of her roles as attorney and risk management consultant for outfitters and guides; experiential, travel, and adventure programs; schools, summer camps, and youth development programs. With an office in New Mexico, Ann is honored to be a part of the Recreation Law Group based in Driggs, ID, and the Teton Valley. The Recreation Law Group has over 100 years of cumulative experience in outdoor recreation, the law, and risk management and serves the entire Rocky Mountain region as well as schools, camps, and experiential programs throughout the country and the world. Ann is a thorough and detailed legal writer, a persuasive and effective litigator, and an engaging speaker, teacher, and consultant. Ann\'s work is informed by a 20+ year career as an independent school and outdoor educator. She has held school positions as classroom teacher, administrator, school counselor, varsity coach, student adviser, and residential faculty. In addition, Ann worked at and consulted with summer camps, including medically supervised camps, for over 13 years, spanning positions from backpacking and cabin counselor to Girls Camp Director. Since 2008, Ann has engaged with schools and camps to facilitate their development or improvement of risk management and safety practices in their international, wilderness, and experiential programs. This work includes reviewing off-campus programming and making recommendations based on applicable law and industry-preferred practices. Ann is a regular speaker and presenter at education, camp, and law conferences. Ann has trekked (and biked) extensively in the Nepal, Tibet, and the Indian Himalaya including leading treks to Everest Base Camp. She is an avid road cyclist, loves rafting and hiking in the desert southwest, is a two-time graduate of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), served two terms on the ACA National Standards Commission, and has been certified as a Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness EMT.
