I founded Alcyomics Ltd in 2007, which started trading in 2009, testing novel pre-clinical monoclonal antibodies to combat graft versus host disease. The idea behind the company came to me after the “Northwick Park disaster” in 2006 when TGN1412 gave rise to adverse immune reactions and near fatal complications in healthy volunteers. I believed we could develop non-animal based human assays to predict these responses. The technology is now patented and could have predicted the outcome of TGN1412. Alcyomics has been further developed to test cosmetics, chemicals and small molecule pharmaceuticals for adverse immune reactions and is trading internationally. I have an active academic career as well as being Director of the Newcastle Cellular Therapies Facility. I am passionate about my research and collaboration in Europe which has been both successful and enjoyable throughout my scientific career. Alcyomics non 3D skin equivalent skin explant patented technology predicts adverse immune reactions to novel compounds, chemicals and drugs. The technology trades as Skimune™ and is the world’s first and only in vitro skin test to offer an immune response human skin histopathology read out – something not possible with current 3D skin equivalent models. Skimune® is a completely unique method of predicting immunogenicity, hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to potential therapeutic compounds, cosmetics and chemical sensitizers.
