In the South and Central Okanagan, during Emergency Response, I typically play the role of Liaison between the Health Authority and other Agencies as well as Local Government. I work closely with Leadership during the four pillars in Emergency Management. During response depending on the incident I respond remote, in person to sites, or to regional and local Emergency Operations Centres. During large scale response we work with our colleagues from around the province to ensure the best and most timely information is provide Health Authorities the information they require in order to make the best decisions with patients and their families.Outside of response I lead After Action Reviews and Debriefing of response with participants from healthcare, public agencies, and local government. I collaborate with participants to find workable solutions to better response for clients and families. I also develop and provide training based on current and emerging risks to support mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.Currently I am participating on a provincial working group supporting the improvement of Mass Casualty Response.

ABOUT ANNE STEPHENSON BENN
Over the last several years, I have been interested in learning more about who I am as a Canadian. How I present myself in my personal and professional life, I lead as a person first. I identify as a mixed race – Chinese Canadian and live on the traditional and unceded territories of the Sylix people. I am a married mother to three children, two of whom are on their own life adventures and one who still remains at home and in highschool.I began my working career in recreation. I saw the benefits of working with people and within their social connections; and how recreation has the ability to create true connection and true support in people’s lives. As a lifeguard, I enjoyed dealing with first aid emergencies and became a paramedic. I enjoyed the lights and sirens and the rush of adrenalin. I enjoyed being able to help people. I learned a lot about compassion and resilience from some of the people who were living in the worst ways. I then moved into a role with the the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen as the Emergency Program Coordinator where Local Government taught me about relationships and learning how to work with other Ministries to ensure the wrap around supports for individuals. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, I had the tremendous opportunity to work alongside the Ministry of Agriculture Food and Fisheries in support of the Farmworker camps. Taking a quality improvement approach and an understanding the people we support, we were able to make incremental improvements to the living conditions of domestic farmworkers within the South Okanagan. I missed working within the field of healthcare, and now I am with Health Emergency Management BC dedicated to supporting Interior Health in the South and Central Okanagan. My core work remains floods, fires, and landslides, but from a different perspective. I continue to intersect with many of the same people my scope is different.Understanding how we can work together to find solutions is what interests me. I am not afraid to dig into difficult challenges and to look for opportunities to find solutions. What drives me to do more is when I see the ability to make lasting change by putting processes in place that we together create.
