ABOUT ANNA SPAIN BRADLEY
Anna Spain Bradley is a legal scholar, higher education leader and human rights advocate. She holds the MacArthur Foundation Chair of International Justice and Human Rights and is a Professor of Law at UCLA School of Law, where she also serves as the Faculty Director of The Promise Institute for Human Rights at UCLA. Spain Bradley is the author of Global Racism: A Challenge for the World (Oxford University Press, forthcoming 2026), building upon Human Rights Racism (Harvard Human Rights Journal, 2019), arguing for the explicit recognition of racism as a human rights violation under international law. Her first book, Human Choice in International Law (Cambridge University Press, 2021) introduced insights from neuroscience to the study of international legal thought. She has published numerous law review articles and co-edited a casebook on International Dispute Resolution (3rd ed. Carolina Academic Press). Her scholarship has been awarded the 2018 Gamm Justice Award “for outstanding written work addressing critical issues in justice” and the 2014 American Society of International Law’s Francis Lieber Award for “exceptional writing that enhances the law of war.” She holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School and a B.A. magna cum laude from Denison University. Professor Spain Bradley is a recognized leader in the field of international law. In 2024, President Biden appointed Spain Bradley to the World Bank ICSID Panel of Conciliators. In 2021, the United Nations appointed Spain Bradley as Legal Expert on the prevention of racist and xenophobic discrimination, where she previously served as a U.S. delegate. She has represented nations as legal counsel before the Permanent Court of Arbitration and served as Attorney-Adviser at the U.S. Department of State, where she earned two Meritorious Honor Awards. She is an elected life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, former Vice President and Executive Council member of the American Society of International Law, former Vice Chair of the ITA Academic Council and a founding member and former Board member of Mediators Beyond Borders International. Professor Spain Bradley has over 10 years of consecutive leadership experience in higher education, with 3 in the C-Suite as UCLA\'s Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
