ABOUT ANNAPURNA KALA

Hello! I am PhD Candidate in Lab for Computational Audio Perception at Johns Hopkins. I am advised by Dr. Mounya Elhilali. My dissertation research focuses on developing audio algorithms for a smart stethoscope, with the goal of enhancing automated diagnosis in pediatric pneumonia. This work is instrumental in ensuring resilience against diverse variables such as environment and patient behavior. I have a Master\'s in Applied Mathematics from Hopkins and a Bachelor\'s in Electrical Engineering from IIT Hyderabad. I spent my Summer\'24 at Meta Reality Labs working on an exciting product-centric speech use case. I explored the intersection of language, emotion, and music by evaluating the Emotional Quotient in Generative Music the previous summer at Dolby Laboratories. I had the wonderful opportunity of attending Telluride Neuromorphic Workshop prior to that where I analyzed Audio-Visual Correspondence with brain response signals (MEG) and the effects of a violin player’s motion with the played music. Before grad school, I worked for a year at Qualcomm developing hardware support framework for the SIM Team.I am eager to transition into industry research roles that align with my passion for audio technology and healthcare starting in Spring 2025. I am equipped with relevant academic/technical expertise, exposure to a wide variety of adjacent research areas through industrial and academic internships, and PhD training in an amazing audio perception lab.
