About Anna Mathews

Public policy is a powerful tool with the capacity to heal or harm our communities. In a world where policy dictates our lives- from our working conditions to our social safety net- everyday people often lack the bandwidth to engage with the onslaught of legislation that impacts them. I\'m passionate about providing them with the tools necessary to engage critically with the democratic process, empowering them to advocate for themselves and their communities.Nonprofits play an increasingly significant role in bridging this gap by advocating for policies that promote the public good. As the founder of Mathews Advocates, a Sacramento lobbying firm, I use my background in advocacy and government relations to expand the reach of impactful nonprofits. Equipping them and those they advocate for increases civic participation, bonds communities, and strengthens our democracy. I spent three years working at the Faculty Association of the California Community Colleges, directing the organization\'s government relations portfolio. I uplifted the mission of the California Community Colleges, enshrining protections and access to resources for the state’s most underserved faculty and students into law. At the core, I am passionate about using policy as a tool to eradicate poverty. I have published research on the efficacy of measures like universal basic income and pretrial risk assessment tools in improving equity, and have engaged in coalition-building and lobbying for anti-poverty bills with the Western Center on Law and Poverty. Ultimately, I am committed to creating a more equitable and just society through my work.
