As an undergraduate research assistant in the Department of Astronomy, I work under the guidance of Professor Zhou Yifan to analyze observational data on brown dwarfs and their host stars. My work involves using Python for data analysis to explore stellar and substellar properties (e.g, effective temperature, luminosity, radius, and composition) with the goal of understanding system age, formation processes, and atmospheric characteristics. In this role, my responsibilities include:Conducting research on the distribution and characteristics of M, L, T, and Y spectral type brown dwarfs, focusing on population trends across varying distance ranges from Earth.Leveraging Python (Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib) for data cleaning, filtering, and visualization, including handling incomplete datasets and building clear, data-driven plots to uncover astrophysical patterns.Applying parallax measurements, light-year conversions, and spectral classification methods to transform raw astronomical data into meaningful scientific insights.Collaborating with research mentors to analyze trends and contribute to a broader understanding of nearby substellar objects, strengthening skills in scientific communication and data interpretation.
