Working under Dr. Yoon in the Research division of the Ocular Tissue Laboratory. Primary responsibilities relate to in house cell culturing procedures, with the primary focus being RPE stem cell cultures-dissection of posterior poles/isolation and culturing procedure of ahRPE-SC (adult human retinal pigment epithelial stem cells), ahIPE (adult human iris pigment cells), human mixed glial cells (Muller Cell, Microglia, Astrocytes, etc.), and fibroblasts-monitoring and maintenance of cultures i.e. splitting, freezing cells-microscopy, to assess attachment of cells, confluency, use of hemocytometer to determine cell count, use of motic images-general laboratory maintenance and skills, i.e, pipetting using micropipettes and serological pipettes, refreshing media for cells, autoclave, cleaning biosafety cabinet, aliquotting media, preparing media to accurate concentrations, maintenance, sterilization, and preparation of surgical instruments-maintaining and updating a laboratory notebook-looking through the medical records of research-consented donors to determine suitability for research partners at institutions such as Weill Cornell and the NIH, and sending offers/corresponding with research partners regarding the suitability and potential distribution of tissueAdditionally, responsibilities similar to recovery laboratory technicians-specular cell count and pachymetry of ocular tissue-EMR review for potential donors-Recovery of transplant and/or research tissue by aseptically performing in-situ corneal excision and/or whole globe enucleation of donor cadaver in hospital morgue or OR, blood draw for serological testing from cadaver-General laboratory maintenance, data entry, office duties such as picking up phone calls-Individual access to numerous EMR systems within the five boroughs, Hudson Valley, and Long Island, such as NYC H+H, NYP, NYU, Montefiore, in order to complete full medical history review
