About Ankon Mitra

Ankon Mitra is a trained architect and practices as a sculptor/installation artist and designer of landscapes. He has built an international reputation as a pioneer of the folding technique through his diverse projects. His studio’s work has been exhibited in India, Italy, France, UK, USA, Japan, China, Singapore, The Maldives and most recently the CODA Museum in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands and the India Pavilion of the just concluded London Design Biennale at the Somerset House. His work was showcased at the Arte Laguna Prize in Venice last year. His sculptures and installations are part of public developments and private collections (outdoor as well as indoor) all over the world, the most recent being at the Bangalore Airport BIAL Head Office, the Taj Residency and the Hilton Hotels in Bangalore. A TEDx speaker and a warrior for \'making connections across disciplines\' with his brainchild - ‘Oritecture - Origami + Architecture’, Mitra shares a unique vision of a universe forming and dissolving from acts of folding. His folding practice encompasses materials as diverse as metal, paper, plastics, leather, fabric, concrete, terracotta, glass and wood veneer. His studio is currently working on the Shanghai Paper Art Biennale (2023), the Indian Ocean Craft Triennale, Perth, Australia (2024), the Indian Ceramics Triennale (2024) and a sculpture commission for the Ahmedabad Airport Expansion (T2). He passionately believes in the two maxims - Geometry Aims at the Eternal (Plato), and The Universe is Mathematics (Max Tegmark). He teaches the aesthetic, material, technical and structural aspects of folding at IITs, NIDs and other colleges of art, architecture and engineering in India, S-E Asia and the US. The studio also specializes in designing landscapes for Cities, Hotels, Resorts and Residential / Commercial projects of different scales. The roster of successfully completed landscape projects include corporate and hospitality groups such as the APL Apollo Group, Deltin Resorts, Ramada Hotels, Mahindra and Mahindra and many more. Ankon completed an MSc. postgraduate degree in Digital Architecture+Computation at the Bartlett, University College London (UCL) in September 2009 with a distinction in his final dissertation \"Developable Double Corrugations\".
