About Ankit Kumar
Hi! I’m Ankit Kumar, a Master’s student in Physics at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Thiruvananthapuram. I have a deep passion for experimental condensed matter physics, with a particular interest in understanding how structural, electronic, and magnetic properties govern the behavior of functional materials.At IISER TVM, my current research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of thermoelectric materials, specifically GeMnTe₂. My work aims to explore the structure–property relationships and enhance thermoelectric performance through controlled synthesis and material optimization.During my semester break after the 2nd semester, I undertook a summer research project at IIT Jodhpur, where I worked on the hydrothermal synthesis of high-entropy hexaferrites. This project allowed me to explore advanced magnetic materials and gain hands-on experience with a wide range of structural, magnetic, and optical characterization techniques, including:1. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) for crystal structure analysis2. Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM) for magnetic characterization3. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for surface morphology studies4. Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) for transport and magnetic measurements5. UV–Visible Spectroscopy (UV–Vis) for optical absorption analysis6. Photoluminescence (PL) and Time-Resolved Photoluminescence (TRPL) for studying electronic transitions and carrier dynamicsThrough these research experiences, I have developed strong technical and analytical skills in materials synthesis, optical and magnetic characterization, and data interpretation. I am particularly driven by the goal of linking a material’s structure to its physical properties to design next-generation functional and energy materials.My long-term aspiration is to build a career as an experimental scientist in condensed matter physics and materials research, contributing to advancements in sustainable and functional technologies through innovative experimentation and material design.
