About Animesh Nikam
I’m a Robotics Systems Engineer who enjoys working at the intersection of hardware, software, and functional safety. Over the past few years at Amazon Robotics, I’ve helped deploy new automation, upgrade legacy systems, and design safer, more reliable multi-robot workcells. My experience ranges from launching a next-generation fulfillment center to leading hardware upgrades for 700+ robotic stations, migrating mobile robots to a secure IoT platform, and leading 50+ buildings through a migration from on-prem systems to AWS comute and services. I like solving problems that require systems thinking, clear documentation, and cross-collaboration across engineering teams. These days, I focus on functional safety and system behavior, writing System Requirements and ConOps, modeling system behavior and performance impacts, and helping shape hardware and software design to meet certification requirements under various ISO requirements. I’m motivated by building robotic systems that are predictable, maintainable, and safe to operate at scale.

I have authored and refined Concept of Operations for various sub-systems and features.• I have built system level models to understand how safety sensors used to detect people near collaborative robots affect reliability and uptime. This included modeling detection accuracy, examining how a fleet of robotic workcells influence each other’s sensing zones, and estimating how often these sensors would interrupt production. The results guided hardware design decisions, defining recovery behavior and performance metrics for newer generations of the system.• I collaborated with safety, controls, and hardware teams to integrate radio-based proximity sensors into our robotic systems and ensure compliance with various ISO and IEC standards - 13849/13855/13857/62061. Based on these functional safety requirements, I helped drive hardware layout updates and software behavior changes needed for certification and safe operation in multi-robot environments.• A major part of my role involved taking vague or evolving requirements and turning them into structured engineering specifications. This included defining correct system behavior, identifying failure modes, validating assumptions with real data from the field, and ensuring that documents reflected how the system is actually used in daily operations.
